The Best Way to Strengthen Your Legs

I am looking for ways to work on my leg strength, but without harming any of my speed. That is the big thing that I hope to help me get a spot on the varsity team. I was looking at trying the sort of powerlifter workouts that help you develop strength in your lower body. I guess that means squats and that sort of thing. Of course my job is going to be pretty tough, even if I do get a lot more power in my legs. I was the starting half back for the JV team last year, but our varsity football team has a lot of good players.
